LAP-BAND Surgery

Obesity is a medical condition that poses very real threats to your physical, mental, and emotional health but it is treatable. The doctors within Tijuana Bariatrics' preferred provider network offer LAP-BAND® surgery to help you take control of your weight. So what makes the LAP-BAND procedure in Tijuana, Mexico, a good weight loss option?

How Does LAP-BAND Work?

The LAP-BAND system is a gastric banding procedure designed to significantly reduce your stomach's capacity to hold food. A LAP-BAND is an inflatable silicone ring that is placed around the top portion of the stomach. LAP-BAND placement surgery is a laparoscopic procedure, meaning the surgeon can place the band by making only a few small incisions and inserting a surgical camera and precise surgical tools.

The LAP-BAND can be inflated or deflated over time to adjust the size of your stomach pouch. When you have less room in your stomach, you will feel fuller faster, which can result in significant weight loss.*

What's Your Body Mass Index?

Low-BMI LAP-BAND

Tijuana Bariatrics wants all patients to experience the advantages of a healthy body weight, so the practice is happy to coordinate low-BMI LAP-BAND for a range of candidates.

For many years, LAP-BAND® was only available to obese patients (with a body mass index of 40 or greater). The procedure was eventually extended to patients with a body mass index of 35 (the second medical level of obesity), and individuals who had certain conditions known to improve with weight loss, like diabetes or high blood pressure. Today, people with BMIs that are even lower can undergo LAP-BAND surgery.

You may be a candidate if:

  • You are overweight
  • You have unsuccessfully tried to lose weight through diet and exercise
  • You are not currently pregnant, or planning to become pregnant soon
  • You do not have certain medical conditions that would make you a poor candidate for surgery, such as heart disease

Of course, your candidacy for LAP-BAND will be based on factors other than just your body mass index. The best way to find out if this procedure is suitable for you is by speaking with a representative from Tijuana Bariatrics who can guide you through the candidacy process.

LAP-BAND Surgery Timeline

You can expect a straightforward procedure and a swift recovery.
You can expect a straightforward procedure and a swift recovery.

Anesthesia

LAP-BAND placement is performed under general anesthesia, so you will be unconscious during the bariatric surgery.

Incisions

The bariatric surgeon will make a few small incisions in the abdomen through which to insert the LAP-BAND and the surgical tools.

Insertion

The surgeon will insert a laparoscope, or surgical camera, through the incisions to guide his maneuvers. The gastric band and necessary instruments are then inserted.

Placement

The surgeon will place the gastric band around the upper part of your stomach.

Inflation

The surgeon will fill the band with silicone or saline, constricting it and creating a stomach pouch of the desired size. In some circumstances, it may be advised that you wait to fill the band until the first post-op adjustment.

Close Incisions

Once the band is securely placed, the bariatric surgeon will remove his tools and stitch the incisions shut.

The Recovery Period

Laparoscopic gastric banding procedures have some of the shortest recovery times of any bariatric surgery. Usually, patients can return to work just one week after the weight loss procedure.

When your surgery is coordinated through Tijuana Bariatrics, you will be taken to the luxurious Marriott hotel in Tijuana to recover for the first few days after your procedure. Your recovery will be monitored by medical professionals who will address any complications.

What to Expect After LAP-BAND Surgery

Post-Op Diet

During the first two weeks following your gastric banding procedure, you will be on a liquid-only diet. In week three after your surgery, pureed foods can be eaten. In week four, you can eat soft-textured foods with no lumps. By week five, you can eat soft solid foods again.

Post-Op Weight Loss

You will notice a dramatic reduction in your weight the first month or two after your surgery, thanks to the gastric band around the upper part of the stomach. Your weight loss results will slow down as your body adjusts to your changing dietary habits.

Determine Your Candidacy Contact Tijuana Bariatrics Today

LAP-BAND Adjustments: Refining Your Results

Although this procedure is one of the least invasive medical weight loss options, it does require a substantial amount of maintenance over time. To achieve optimal long-term weight loss, the band will require occasional adjustments to account for changes in appetite, to address plateaus in weight loss, or to mitigate potential complications like vomiting.

Adjustments are completed by injecting or removing additional saline or silicone through an access port that is left just under the skin and is connected to the band. The first adjustment usually takes place around two months after the initial bariatric surgery.

For your convenience, Tijuana Bariatrics can provide you with information on an accredited company within the U.S. that performs band adjustments for an affordable cost. Typically, patients who choose to undergo LAP-BAND surgery need three to five band modifications in order to continue experiencing outstanding results during their weight loss journey.

Maintaining Long-Term Weight Loss

Weight loss with gastric banding is a gradual process. Typically, patients can expect to lose between 50 and 60 percent of their excess body weight within two years. Of course, weight loss is never automatic. Patients will need to take several steps on their own in order to achieve the best possible results, including:

Understanding the Risks of LAP-BAND

As with any surgical procedure, LAP-BAND surgery involves a certain degree of risk. Relative to other bariatric surgeries, the occurrence of surgical complications during the procedure is very low, primarily because the treatment does not involve cutting or reshaping any internal organs. Potential complications during surgery include:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • The band slipping out of place
  • Mechanical malfunction

Similarly, post-surgery risks are relatively mild compared to other weight loss surgeries. Side effects that some patients experience after the procedure include:

  • Vomiting
  • Acid reflux
  • Dehydration
  • Constipation

Working with a reputable and experienced surgeon greatly reduces the chances of complications. The surgeons who coordinate with Tijuana Bariatrics to perform bariatric surgery in Tijuana, Mexico, are highly trained in the most modern surgical methods. Patients who coordinate care through Tijuana Bariatrics can experience life-changing weight loss at a fraction of the U.S. price.*

Additional Bariatric Surgery Options

If you are experiencing a failed LAP-BAND, Tijuana Bariatrics can perform other surgeries that reduce a large part of the stomach. After removing your gastric band, your surgeon can perform:

A Gastric Sleeve

Also known as sleeve gastrectomy, a gastric sleeve is an effective and relatively simple surgical procedure. Most of the stomach is removed in sleeve gastrectomy. The remaining stomach is about the size of a banana. Patients with a greatly reduced stomach feel full after eating less and can lose weight in a healthy manner.

Gastric Bypass

Gastric bypass is another popular procedure at our Tijuana, Mexico, facility. In this surgery, our surgeon reduces the size of the stomach and reroutes part of the small intestine. Gastric bypass reduces the amount you can eat and limits the number of calories you absorb from your food. These two features help patients lose weight.
