SADI-S Surgery
An Innovation in Bariatric Surgery
The most widely accepted bariatric surgeries due to their success are restrictive surgeries (such as gastric sleeve) and malabsorptive surgeries (such as gastric bypass). Wouldn't it be fantastic to have a combination of the two? Here is the good news: now it is possible! Let's take a look at more widely used procedures and how they compare to Single Anastomosis Duodeno-Ileal Bypass with Sleeve Gastrectomy (SADI-S).
Sleeve Gastrectomy
Many common bariatric procedures in use today are restrictive surgeries such as a sleeve gastrectomy. Also referred to as a gastric sleeve, this type of surgical technique reduces the size of the stomach, limiting the amount of food the patient can eat before they begin to feel full.
Duodenal Switch Surgery
An alternative to a sleeve gastrectomy is malabsorptive surgeries such as a duodenal switch or gastric bypass. Duodenal switch surgery shortens the length of the small intestine to reduce the number of calories absorbed by the body. Duodenal switch is generally recommended for extremely obese individuals.
Combining the Two Techniques
A recent development in the medical-assisted weight-loss field, Single Anastomosis Duodeno-Ileal Bypass with Sleeve Gastrectomy combines the restrictive properties of a sleeve gastrectomy with the malabsorptive function of a duodenal switch into a single minimally invasive weight-loss surgery. The bariatric surgeons partnering with Tijuana Bariatrics in Tijuana, Mexico, are proud to now offer the revolutionary Single Anastomosis Duodeno-Ileal Bypass with Sleeve Gastrectomy to help patients struggling to improve their health.
"If You’re Considering Having This Life Changing Surgery...do It!"
The entire experience was flawless. From the first time I spoke with Martha, the patient coordinator to boarding the plane to come home was perfect. The drivers were all friendly, caring and knowledgeable of the area and border process. The hotel was beautiful and the staff were beyond amazing. I felt like royalty. The hospital (CER) was immaculate and the staff were kind and welcoming. The doctors were wonderful and the care I received was top notch. I can’t say enough about the process. If you’re considering having this life changing surgery...do it! My surgery date was January 29, 2021
View On GoogleI had a top notch experience at Blue Hospital for my VSG procedure. The staff/nurses were attentive to my every need and proactively administered meds so I was never uncomfortable, nauseous, or in pain. I had a large room and I felt very safe with all of the covid protocols practiced at the hospital and the hotel. The whole experience was much easier than I expected and my recovery is going great. I have not messaged the team with many questions since I arrived home, but I did once and received a prompt response from Atallia, the patient coordinator. Martha, another coordinator who was responsible for all pre-op scheduling and communication was very helpful and available to answer questions and concerns. I do not hesitate to recommend Tijuana Bariatrics.

BMI of 50 and Over
Obesity-related diseases including hypertension, high fasting plasma glucose, and a high body mass index are considered three out of the four biggest global health threats today (smoking is the fourth). In the United States, more than one-quarter of patients interested in bariatric surgery are super obese. The prevalence of comorbidities in those with a BMI greater than 50 includes a significant increase in cardiovascular mortality. SADI-S can help patients with super obesity reduce these associated risks.
Previous Bariatric Surgery
Patients who have undergone options like gastric sleeve or gastric band surgery in the past who failed to shed excess weight can benefit from SADI-S revision surgery. Similarly, patients who lost weight initially but then regained substantial weight after gastric band or gastric sleeve surgery can benefit from SADI-S revision surgery. Unfortunately, since this method uses a similar malabsorption method, patients who have received a duodenal switch are not eligible for this procedure.

Possible Side Effects & Complications
Just like any type of surgical procedure, there are risks and possible complications associated with SADI-S bariatric surgery. The surgeons working with Tijuana Bariatrics use laparoscopic techniques to minimize these complications, which are mostly minor and resolve quickly. These include:
- Pain at incision
- Infection
- Obstructions
- Bleeding
Side-effects in the months following surgery can be reduced with a healthy diet and eliminating simple carbohydrates (sugar). Side effects common to SADI-S include:
- Increased acid reflux
- Nutrient deficiencies
- Loose stools
- Flatulence
It is important for patients to strictly adhere to post-surgery dietary guidelines, including vitamin and mineral supplementation and follow-up appointments.

View On GoogleFrequently Asked SADI-S Questions
How long does the surgery take?
Since SADI-S is a minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure, the surgery only takes between 90 and 120 minutes to perform. Following surgery, patients spend an additional half-hour to an hour in the recovery room. Patients can begin walking around the premises after about four hours.
How long is the hospital stay?
During the next two nights, patients will be monitored in the hospital facilities by their surgeons, general doctors, and nutritionists. These medical professionals will advise the patient on the proper aftercare and new diet, and provide information about the tests required for follow-up treatment.
What is life like after surgery?
Immediately after the procedure, patients will experience a significant decrease in their appetite. This is due to a reduction in the ghrelin hormone which is responsible for making a person feel hungry. Over the following weeks and months, patients should experience the satisfaction of massive weight loss. Blood sugar levels should normalize in about six months. With the proper care, patients can enjoy life-long weight loss and a more active lifestyle.
