Hear From a Real Gastric Sleeve Patient

"I had the sleeve procedure done and every single person I had to deal with was as nice and friendly as can be. The majority of the staff either spoke English or used the translator apps to make communication smooth. I did not have any negative experiences with them. The facility was very clean and they were constantly cleaning it to keep it that way." Beth Pearce

What Is a Gastric Sleeve?

Gastric sleeve surgery (also called a sleeve gastrectomy) involves reducing the size of the stomach to about 15% of its original size. When your stomach is smaller, you will feel full after eating less food, and your body will absorb fewer calories. This leads to a healthy rate of dramatic weight loss.

The gastric sleeve procedure is a safe and effective weight loss surgery. In fact, a five-year study conducted by the World Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery found that 98% of gastric sleeve recipients showed effective results and zero complications.

Like many weight loss procedures, sleeve gastrectomies are performed laparoscopically, so there is minimal scarring. During the surgery, the bariatric surgeon will remove stomach tissue and staple the remaining tissue shut so that it forms the shape of a tube, or "sleeve."

Before, during, and after gastric sleeve procedure

A five-year study of laparoscopic gastric sleeve surgery showed effective results and zero complications for over 98% of patients.

Once you are in beautiful Tijuana, you are so very well taken care of by the hosting hotel and your driver. The hospital is so clean and serene. The drs and nursing are amazing! Minimally Invasive Techniques Offer Several Benefits

The doctors in the preferred provider network perform sleeve gastrectomies as a single incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS). Laparoscopic surgery involves the use of a laparoscope, a small, advanced medical camera, and precise surgical tools to perform bariatric surgery inside the body without making large incisions or exposing internal organs. When this weight loss surgery is performed with this minimally invasive technique, many patients enjoy reduced hospital stays with minimal pain and discomfort.*

How Does Sleeve Gastrectomy Work? A Treatment Timeline

Administering Anesthesia

At the beginning of your surgery, you will be placed under general anesthesia so you will be totally unconscious throughout the procedure.

Creating Incisions

The surgeon will make a single small incision in the abdomen to access the stomach.

Inserting the Laparoscope

The surgeon will insert the laparoscope and other surgical devices through the incision.

Removing Tissue

The surgeon will cut and remove up to 85% of your stomach tissue.

Shaping the Stomach

The surgeon will shape the remaining stomach tissue into an oblong tube or sleeve shape. The new, smaller stomach is securely sealed with staples.

Closing the Incisions

The surgeon will remove the surgical tools and stitch the incision shut.

Let's Take a Closer Look at the Procedure

I went to Tijuana Bariatrics nearly 5 months ago now and it was the best decision I have made in a long time. The experience was absolutely seamless. Florence Hospital was very clean and the nursing staff was always on hand. I got better care there than at my local hospital where I live. I felt comfortable and safe 100% of the time.

I’ve had zero complications and healed nicely. In 5 months Ive lost 85 lbs and feel better than ever right now! My foot pain is basically gone, my back issues have felt so much better, and I’m so ready to take on life!

I can not say enough good things about Tijuana Bariatric Center.  All of the staff, from my coordinator, to the staff and nurses and all the doctors were fantastic.  The facility is the cleanest medical facility I have ever seen and the care was top notch.  They really put my nerves at ease.
If I did it all over again I would without a doubt choose them again and again!  Thank you for everything!

Gastric Sleeve Recovery

After gastric sleeve surgery, you will need to remain in the hospital in Tijuana, Mexico, for two nights so that you have medical staff on hand to monitor and assist you as needed. Additionally, you will need to undergo some post-operative testing before you are discharged. Your diet will be limited to liquids for the first two weeks but will gradually integrate soft foods, then solids. However, it is important to remember to only eat the small quantities of foods recommended by your doctor.

The first few weeks should be focused on resting, but you will need to walk around to discourage blood clots. After about a month, increasing your activity level will likely be approved. Over the next few months, you will gradually increase your exercise routine. Depending on the type of work you do, you may be able to return to work after a week or two. However, some patients require up to four to six weeks off.

Eating Habits After Your Gastric Sleeve Surgery

In order to experience the benefits of your gastric sleeve, you'll have to adjust your eating habits.
Week 1

One Week After Surgery

For the first seven days or so after your surgery, you'll only be able to drink clear liquids to stay hydrated. Other foods can cause problems like diarrhea and bowel obstruction. Beverages that at caffeinated, carbonated, and sugary should be avoided.
2 weeks

Two Weeks After Surgery

By the eighth day after your surgery, you should be able to eat pureed foods, protein shakes, and soups. As more foods are reintroduced into your diet, be sure to carefully follow your doctor’s instructions.

Three weeks

Three Weeks After Surgery

Getting closer to the one-month mark, patients can usually begin to eat soft solids like well-cooked vegetables, soft fruits without seeds, and well-cooked meats like fish and chicken. Patients should still avoid sugars, fats, and foods that are difficult to digest, including vegetables, nuts, and steak. These foods can cause unwanted symptoms.

1 month

One Month After Surgery

By about five weeks after the surgery, patients should be able to eat regular foods and create a long-term eating plan. Keep in mind that you can't eat as much food as you could before your gastric sleeve surgery, so you’ll need to be careful to choose nutrient-rich foods.

Will I Need Plastic Surgery for Excess Skin?

Many, but not all, of our gastric sleeve patients choose to undergo some type of body contouring once they have achieved their target weight. That's because you might experience substantial amounts of sagging skin throughout your body, especially in your midsection. Tijuana Bariatrics can help to coordinate everything you might need to reveal your new figure, from tummy tucks to arm and thigh lifts

Alternative Options to Gastric Sleeve Surgery

If you're not a candidate for gastric sleeve surgery or would prefer a different weight loss surgery, Tijuana Bariatrics in Mexico offers other options, including:
gastric bypass

Traditional Gastric Bypass

In this procedure, a small pouch is made from your upper stomach. This pouch is then connected to your small intestine, allowing food to bypass most of your stomach when consumed.

mini gastric bypass

Mini Gastric Bypass

A small pouch from your upper stomach is also made in this procedure to decrease stomach volume. Mini gastric bypass requires less intestinal rerouting than traditional gastric bypass.

duodenal switch surgery

Duodenal Switch

This surgery combines a gastric sleeve procedure with a rearrangement of the small intestine, limiting both the amount of food needed to feel full and the number of calories the body can absorb.

LAP-BAND Surgery

LAP-BAND

During LAP-BAND surgery, a flexible silicone ring is placed around the stomach. It can be inflated to varying degrees in order to reduce how much you can eat at once. This procedure is unique because it is reversible.

Gastric Sleeve Plication Surgery

Gastric Sleeve Plication

During gastric sleeve plication surgery, your surgeon will make modifications to make the stomach's capacity smaller. However, the tissue will not be removed, but folded inward. Like gastric bands, this procedure can also be reversed.

SADI-S Surgery

SADI-S

Single Anastomosis Duodeno-Ileal Bypass with Sleeve Gastrectomy (SADI-S) combines the benefits of gastric bypass with gastric sleeve. Patients can expect to experience substantial weight loss because of its restrictive and malabsorptive properties.

Gastric Sleeve Revision

It is fairly common for any bariatric surgery to eventually require revision. After a gastric sleeve procedure, the stomach may become stretched over time and require re-tightening. A surgical revision is a simple procedure and can easily be performed by a certified bariatric surgeon.

In rare cases, gastric sleeve recipients may develop serious acid reflux. In that case, the sleeve can be converted to a gastric bypass. Gastric bypass surgery redirects the flow of acid and bile, which can relieve acid reflux. The doctors in the preferred provider network can perform gastric bypass surgery at the surgical center in Mexico.

The bariatric surgeons coordinating with Tijuana Bariatrics in Mexico are able to revise both their own weight loss surgeries and surgeries performed by other doctors.
