Lap Band Removal Options
While many of our patients enjoy drastic weight loss results following LAP-BAND® surgery, some patients experience uneven or unsatisfactory weight loss in the months and years following the placement of their lap band. To help those patients attain the body they desire, bariatric revision surgery may be needed.
If you are interested in learning more about your lap band removal options, the bariatric specialists of Tijuana Bariatrics in Tijuana, Mexico, can explain the steps involved in safely removing the device. Once that procedure is complete, you can pursue alternative bariatric weight loss options.
How Will My Lap Band Be Removed?
Lap band removal is needed in around 9% of patients. Removal of the lap band is straightforward and will be conducted by an experienced bariatric surgeon who has received training from a top medical school. Our surgeons work collaboratively with anesthesiologists, follow-up care physicians, and nutritionists to ensure that we care for all of your medical needs.
Our surgeons can perform your lap band removal laparoscopically. The use of a laparoscope (a slender tool that is equipped with a camera) allows for small incisions, lower rates of side effects, and a shorter recovery period.
Once you are anesthetized, your bariatric surgeon will make small incisions in your abdomen. Any scar tissue that has formed on your band will be removed. Then, the sutures that were used to hold the band in place will be removed. The gastric band will then be removed, which allows the stomach to regain its normal orientation.
The entire surgery often takes less than one hour to complete. You will be given detailed recovery guidelines that should be followed closely. Most patients are able to slowly resume normal activities in one to four weeks after surgery.
What Are My Bariatric Treatment Alternatives?
Once you have recovered from your lap band removal, you will become a candidate for an alternative bariatric treatment. Our bariatric center offers a wide range of surgical weight loss options. Many of our patients who experience inadequate weight loss, lap band intolerance, or nausea from their lap band treatment can enjoy better results through gastric bypass or gastric sleeve.
Sleeve Gastrectomy
Gastric sleeve surgery removes a large portion of the stomach. By reducing the stomach to about 15 percent of its original size, you will become fuller more quickly. Eating less food will lead to steady and drastic weight loss in the months following surgery.
Gastric Bypass
Gastric bypass surgically divides the stomach into two sections. The new pouch is attached to the small intestines. The reduced stomach will hold around one cup of food.
