Recovering from Gastric Sleeve Plication: Patient Tips
Gastric sleeve plication is a procedure in which an internal fold is created in the stomach. This reduces the size of the stomach, limiting the amount of food a person can consume in a single sitting. The stomach is sutured to keep the stomach smaller, which facilitates weight loss in the long run.
The team at Tijuana Bariatrics would like to look at the recovery process after someone has undergone a gastric sleeve plication. This will help patients know what to expect after surgery. More detailed instructions will be given as part of the consultation process.
Taking Time Off from Work
One of the most important parts of recovery is resting. That means being away from work so you can give your body the time and energy it needs to heal. Most patients will want to take around two to three weeks off from work.
If your line of work is physically demanding, you may need to take additional time off or designate certain on-the-job duties to someone else upon your return until you are completely healed.
Common Side Effects After Gastric Sleeve Plication
Common side effects following gastric sleeve plication include:
- Pain and discomfort
- Bruising and swelling
- Nausea
These side effects generally get better within the first week or so after surgery. Rest and cold compresses can help keep these side effects properly managed.
Giving Your Body the Opportunity to Rest
In the first days after surgery, it's very important that you focus on resting. You'll want to avoid major physical exertion for at least two to three weeks after surgery. In the weeks after, patients will slowly return to normal physical activity levels. For example, patients can gradually increase the intensity of exercise about a month after surgery has been performed.
Changes to Your Diet
While gastric plication surgery is less invasive than a gastric sleeve, patients will still need to follow a careful diet to promote weight loss and prevent issues with the stomach and digestive tract during recovery.
In the first week after gastric sleeve plication, patients will be on a strict liquid diet. In the second week after surgery, patients will be able to incorporate gelatin, yogurt, and broths into their diet. By week three, pureed foods and soft noodles can be added. By the end of a month, patients can slowly reintroduce solid foods into their diet, chewing thoroughly and eating slowly.
Walking to Promote Circulation
While traditional exercise will need to be avoided for a few weeks to heal, patients are encouraged to walk after surgery. Walking promotes circulation and helps prevent harmful blood clots from forming in the legs.
In the first week, patients will typically walk a few times a day for just a minute or so. Patients will be encouraged to walk a little more and a little longer each day as they're able to, week by week. By the end of a month, walking will help patients to regular physical activity levels. It's also a way for patients to have some low-impact exercise as they adjust to their new lifestyle.
