Liquid and Pureed Foods That Can Be Consumed after Bariatric Surgery
At Tijuana Bariatrics, we believe that bariatric surgery can empower chronically obese patients to take control over their lives and become healthier and happier overall. However, bariatric surgery is just the first step in a lifelong journey, a fact that patients must understand before committing to any surgical procedure. Bariatric surgery promotes massive weight loss, but the weight loss itself requires hard work, focus, and a dedication to a healthy diet and post-surgical lifestyle.
While adapting to a new diet may seem difficult at first, our team will provide you with the compassionate, expert guidance you need, supporting you as you adjust to your new lifestyle. This guidance will be particularly important as you start out on a diet of liquid and pureed foods. Our nutritionist will discuss liquid and pureed foods that can be consumed after bariatric surgery during your consultation at our Tijuana, Mexico practice so that you know exactly what to expect before you commit to your procedure.
Are you a good candidate for bariatric surgery? To find out, schedule your initial consultation at Tijuana Bariatrics today.
Which Liquid and Pureed Foods Can Be Consumed after Bariatric Surgery?
In the first week or so after your bariatric surgery, you will be allowed to consume only clear liquids. The timeline presented in this post represents just a general guideline; a specific timeline will be presented to you by our bariatric experts.
During this initial period after bariatric surgery, you will most likely be allowed to consume:
- Water
- Clear, fat-free broths
- Sugar-free Jell-O
- Skim milk
Depending on your unique nutritional needs, we may also recommend that you start consuming protein shakes during this period.
During the second week after surgery, you will probably start adding pureed foods to your diet. This stage of your post-surgical diet will most likely last for one to two weeks. Pureed foods you will be allowed to eat will probably include:
- Yogurt
- Strained cream of mushroom, cream of chicken, or cream of potato soup
- Small-curd, non-fat cottage cheese
- Soft tofu
- Scrambled eggs
- Cream of wheat
- Cream of rice
- Thinned oatmeal
- Pureed beef, chicken, or turkey
- Mashed potatoes
- Apple sauce
- Mashed bananas
- Pureed peaches, pears, apricots, and melons
- Diet V-8® juice
- Pureed spinach, carrots, and green beans
- Sugar-free lemonade and Kool-Aid®
- Low-sugar baby food
Please keep in mind that our bariatric specialists will have to give you permission to start eating pureed foods before you can start doing so. It is unsafe for you to change your diet before receiving approval from our team.
During all phases of your post-surgical diet, you will want to avoid caffeine and carry a bottle of water with you to stay hydrated. Drink all liquids slowly and without a straw to prevent nausea and vomiting.
