How to Prepare for Bariatric Surgery
Weight loss is not an easy task to undertake. Particularly for patients who are considered obese, getting your weight within a healthy range can seem like an impossible task. At our practice in Tijuana, bariatric surgery is an option that is available to help our patients on their weight loss journey. We take bariatric surgery very seriously and will make every effort to ensure that your surgery is a success. Before the day of surgery, our patients in Tijuana will be given a copy of bariatric surgery instructions. By following these instructions, you will be sure that you are well prepared for surgery and recovery.
Preparing for Bariatric Surgery
The preparation for your bariatric surgery will actually start well before the day of your surgery. We need your body to be in the best shape to undergo surgery so if you are a smoker, you will need to quit for at least 30 days before surgery. You should also refrain from drinking alcohol for at least 48 hours prior to bariatric surgery. If you take any medication, you will need to speak to one of our surgeons to get specific instructions regarding the use of your medication before and after surgery. Following are some other steps that should be taken to make sure you are fully prepared for your bariatric surgery:
- Purchase any supplies and fill any medications that will be needed for your recovery. It is also a good idea to set up an area in your home where you can rest during your recovery.
- Find a friend or family member who can escort you to and from your surgery. You should also have a group of friends who can help you if you need anything during your recovery.
- Pack a small bag that you will bring with you the day of your surgery. This should include your insurance card, emergency contact information, any informative material or surgical instructions, and your identification. You should not bring any valuables such as credit cards or jewelry.
When the day of your surgery arrives, be sure that you are dressed comfortably in clothes that will be easy to put on after your surgery. Make sure you allow yourself plenty of time to get to your appointment so that you arrive on time. Following these steps will set you up for a successful surgery and recovery.
Alternate Surgery
Before we agree to perform bariatric surgery on any of our patients, we will conduct a thorough examination and consultation to determine if bariatric surgery is a safe and effective treatment option for them. For our patients in Tijuana, lap band surgery, gastric bypass surgery, gastric sleeve surgery, and duodenal switch surgery may be recommended to qualified bariatric surgery patients.
