Bariatric surgery is a life-changing tool, but it is not the right solution for everyone. At Tijuana Bariatrics, patient safety is our absolute priority. Sometimes, the bravest medical decision is saying “no” or “not yet.”
If you are wondering what can disqualify you from bariatric surgery, understanding the medical reasoning is the first step toward fixing the issue. Here, we explore the absolute contraindications.
Medical Conditions That May Disqualify You
While surgery helps treat metabolic diseases, certain conditions make the risk too high. These include:
- Severe Heart or Lung Failure: If your body cannot withstand the stress of anesthesia.
- Active Cancer: Patients typically must be in remission before considering elective surgery.
- Advanced Liver Cirrhosis: High bleeding risks may disqualify patients.
The “Shrinking Liver” Factor
A common reason for postponing surgery is an enlarged liver. Before your procedure, you will be placed on a specific diet to shrink the liver. If the liver remains too large, the surgeon may not be able to safely perform the gastric sleeve surgery.
BMI and Weight Criteria
Many patients ask about the maximum BMI for bariatric surgery. While there is rarely a strict maximum, there is a strict minimum. You are likely not a candidate if your BMI is below 30 and you have no comorbidities.
Age Limits: Too Young or Too Old?
Generally, our program accepts patients between 18 and 65 years old. Older adults can be candidates if they pass a frailty assessment. If you are 70 but have a strong heart, you might still qualify.
Can You Become a Candidate?
Being told you are not a candidate today does not mean “never.” Many disqualifying factors can be fixed. Sometimes, patients who had previous failed surgeries may be candidates for corrective bariatric procedures once their health stabilizes.
