Instructions for the First Week After Gastric Sleeve
Many patients at other practices have a different experience in their first week after bariatric surgery. It’s much different with us. At our Tijuana weight loss surgery center, we carefully and closely monitor your health for much of the first week to ensure that you are perfectly fine during the crucial early days after surgery. This helps us ensure that the gastric sleeve surgery is carried out safely and there are no complications.
We want to look at what happens during that first week in a little more detail right now. We’ve covered the gastric sleeve recovery timeline before on this blog, so feel free to read the previous post for additional information about these matters.
Hospital Stay for Two Nights
For the first two nights after gastric sleeve surgery, you will remain in the hospital for monitoring. This also gives us a chance to double and triple check the revised stomach pouch to ensure that there are no leaks or problems.
Hotel Stay for Two Nights
Following your two nights in the hospital, patients can expect two nights spent in the local hotel. This means patients are near enough for us to continue to keep tabs on them but they are also allowed to rest outside of the confines of the hospital. Patients will be driven to their hotel by our practice’s private driver.
Soreness and Grogginess is Common
After any surgery, patients can expect a certain amount of soreness and grogginess as they recover. This is your body’s natural response to the surgical process. Patients are encouraged to get a lot of rest during this first week and to follow all instructions for pain relief provided by the practice.
A Liquid Diet Early On
The first week after surgery, patients will be on an all-liquid diet consisting of clear liquids. This includes water, certain broths, and other approved beverages that are sugar-free and non-carbonated. Thankfully after gastric sleeve surgery, patients will not experience hunger pangs which makes this all-liquid diet for the first week more tolerable.
Activities to Avoid
A little bit of walking in the hotel room and at home by mid-week and the end of the first week are recommended to promote circulation. However, the following activities should be avoided until instructed otherwise by your surgeon:
- Strenuous physical activities
- Heavy lifting
- Sexual activity
- Bending over at the waist
- Consuming alcohol
- Consuming caffeinated beverages
- Using tobacco products
Having a Loved One to Assist with Needs
During the first week as you are resting and recovering, it’s important that you have a family member or friend with you to help run errands and accomplish various tasks around the home. This takes a lot of stress and worry off of you so that you can concentrate more on resting and full wellness.
Keep In Touch with Our Team
As the weeks continue and as your healing progresses, we will keep in touch with you to monitor your progress. We also encourage you to keep in touch with us in case you have any questions or concerns. By dealing with these matters as soon as possible, major health issues can be prevented.

Instructions for the Second Week After Gastric Sleeve
The surgeons of Tijuana Bariatrics have achieved excellent results thanks to gastric sleeve (sleeve gastrectomy), a safe and effective option for weight loss surgery. Part of the positive results is our focus on patient education, which means helping patients understand what they can do before and after surgery to avoid complications.
We’ve previously covered some post-op instructions for the first week after gastric sleeve on this blog. Let’s continue our look at patient healing and wellness by looking at some basic instructions for the second week after surgery.
Changes Come Gradually When Recovering from Gastric Sleeve
Though gastric sleeve surgery does not involve as much revision of the digestive tract as a gastric bypass, patients should keep in mind that changes from surgery and full recovery will take time. The second week after the surgery has been performed can pose a few challenges, but rest assured that the results will be worthwhile and the weight loss will have many benefits.
Week Two Diet: Liquid with Protein
Patients will graduate from the liquid diet of the first week to a liquid diet that incorporates proteins and very soft foods in the second week. In addition to all of the liquids mentioned in the previous blog post, patients can also add the following to their diet by week two:
- Non-fat yogurt
- Protein powder in water
- Very soft noodles in soup
- Very watery oatmeal
- Creamy soups without chunks
- Sugar-free pudding, ice cream, and sorbet
Remember to go slowly when adding new foods to your diet and to not push yourself as you are adjusting to life after surgery.
Activities That You Should Continue to Avoid
Patients should still continue to avoid heavy lifting, sexual activity, vigorous exercise, bending at the waist, heavy lifting, and any kind of major physical exertion. Use of tobacco products and consumption of alcohol are similarly to be avoided.
Light Walking to Improve Circulation
Patients are asked to walk around the home to improve circulation as they heal. This can prevent blood clots in the legs, reduce listlessness and fatigue, and help improve the overall healing process and aid in the management of post-surgical side effects.
Improvement of Early Side Effects
By the end of the first week, patients should notice a mild change in the early side effects following surgery. Pain, discomfort, and soreness will continue to be less of a factor as the weeks continue, and patients will notice improvements in overall feelings of wellness as they continue the adjustment and recovery process.
Continue to Keep in Contact with Our Team
Patients should continue to keep in contact with our team as they recovery so that we can answer any questions as they arise. Having skilled medical professionals on your side helps you have your questions answered and concerns addressed in a timely manner.

Taking Time Off Work After Gastric Sleeve Surgery
The doctors of Tijuana Bariatrics believe that the sleeve gastrectomy is one of the ideal options for surgical weight loss. Also known as gastric sleeve, the procedure makes the stomach smaller to promote safe and rapid weight loss.
Even though modern surgical techniques have allowed bariatric surgeons to avoid open surgery and achieve exceptional overall results by avoiding major incisions, the procedure is a major one given how it revises the stomach size, your appetite, and the nature of your diet. Consequently, healing will take some time, though patients will notice major improvements in the early weeks of the procedure as they continue toward full recovery.
How long should I take off work after gastric sleeve surgery?
While some bariatric surgeons state that patients can be back to work in as soon as one week, it’s more ideal for patients to take at least two weeks off. Sometimes three weeks off of work will be ideal if the patient is not feeling totally well even after the second week.
Why should my surgical recovery take that long?
As we noted above, gastric sleeve is a major change to the system and it can take time for your body to make the adjustments necessary for optimal healing. Getting lots of rest early on aids in the overall healing process.
Patients will also note an adjustment period when it comes to their diet, starting with liquids only and then slowly incorporating more soft foods on the road back to solids. While patients will often feel energized by the early weight loss, some fatigue is normal as patients get used to their new diet.
Is there anything I can do to speed up the healing process early on?
The best way to speed up the healing process is to have a good and full healing period in those first days and weeks. This means a focus on healing and getting ample rest so your body is given the right amount of time to recover.
Yet patients should not just lie back when recovering. As soon as they are able, patients should walk around a little at their home. This will promote circulation and prevent the formation of blood clots and other potential complications.
Stay In Touch with Our Team During the Recovery Process
During those early days and weeks of your recovery, it’s important that you keep in touch with our team. We will be able to provide you with answers to questions that you may have, and we can help you with any pressing concerns that may be on your mind. Getting this sort of care is crucial for problem-free healing early on and good recovery results in the long run.
Remember: Be Patient and Do Not Push Yourself Too Soon
While you may want to get back to work as soon as possible, be sure to take the time off that you need. There is no shame in taking an extra week off work and slowly transitioning back into your work duties if needed. Taking care in that first month of healing will help ensure successful bariatric surgery.

Gastric Sleeve Incisions: Where Are They Located?
The doctors of Tijuana Bariatrics have a great understanding of patient needs and concerns. Whenever a patients undergoes gastric sleeve surgery for safe surgical weight loss, they always offer detailed information about the procedure, the results of bariatric surgery, and the healing process. With that in mind, we want to consider the incisions that are made for gastric sleeve surgery so patients have a better perspective of what the process entails.
How many incisions are made for gastric sleeve surgery?
It depends on the nature of the surgery, though in most cases there will be roughly five incisions made, often ranging from a few centimeters to about two inches in length. In some gastric sleeve surgeries, just one incision is necessary, and its size will vary based on its location.
The ideal number of incisions for you and your needs will be determined by the complexity of your case and other factors.
Where are these incisions located along the abdominal area?
For most gastric sleeve procedures, there is one incision at the upper abdominal area and additional incisions made along the abdomen generally at, just above, or around the belly button level. Single incision gastric sleeves typically involve a single incision on the side or a single incision made in the belly button.
Why are multiple incisions usually necessary?
Multiple incisions are made in order to provide weight loss surgeons with excellent access, flexibility, and safety when performing the procedure. The surgery will involve a small camera placed into the abdominal area, with additional incisions allowing the surgeon to use other small tools. Having a few small incisions prevents the need for a large single incision along the abdominal wall.
How will these incision look as I heal from gastric sleeve surgery?
Incisions from gastric sleeve surgery are relatively small, all things considered. In the weeks after gastric sleeve, you will notice bruising and swelling around the incision sites as well as the abdominal region in general. This is a natural response to surgery and the bruising, swelling, and other kinds of discoloration will fade with time.
How noticeable is scarring after gastric sleeve surgery?
One of the advantages of small incisions is that they tend to fade very well with time. With proper healing and care, the scarring after surgery will be very subtle and hard to notice.
How can I minimize potential risks of scarring after gastric sleeve?
In order to reduce the visibility of scarring in the long run, patients should follow their pre-op and post-op instructions to the letter. This will prevent major complications from occurring and provide the body with ample ability to heal quickly and properly.
Other Considerations for Gastric Sleeve Surgery and Recovery
After gastric sleeve, it is not uncommon for patients to undergo body contouring surgeries after surgery to remove the loose skin and sagging tissue after major weight loss. We can discuss these matters with you during the consultation process as these incisions for surgery tend to be more noticeable, though cosmetic surgeons work hard to make them as unnoticeable as possible.

The Consequences of Eating Too Much After Gastric Sleeve Surgery
Our team of doctors is committed to helping patients lose weight and keep it off using the latest bariatric techniques and technologies. At Tijuana Bariatrics, we feel that this means giving gastric sleeve patients information about the pre-surgery and post-op process, including the challenges they may face and how they can be avoided or overcome. With this in mind, let’s consider eating habits and overeating following gastric sleeve surgery.
Can I overeat after I have undergone gastric sleeve surgery?
Yes.
Even though your stomach size is smaller, it is possible to eat too much for your stomach’s capacity. You see, feelings of fullness often reach your brain slower that you’d think, so you could be more stuffed than you should be by the time your brain registers that you are full.
This is a common problem for people who have undergone gastric sleeve relatively recently as they have yet to understand the new nature of their diet and eating habits after surgery has been performed.
What happens if I overeat?
If you overeat after having a gastric sleeve, the following is likely to happen:
- Vomiting – Voiding your stomach is a common response to overeating after gastric sleeve, so don’t be surprised if overeating leads to some vomiting.
- Diarrhea – Food may wind up in the intestines sooner than it should, leading to diarrhea.
- Discomfort – Cramps and abdominal pain are very common when a person who has undergone a gastric sleeve has overeaten.
- Dumping Syndrome – The previous three issues are all present in a condition known as dumping syndrome, which happens to a number of people who undergo bariatric surgery.
To avoid these problems, consider the following advice below.
Eat Small Portions and Eat Slowly
Eating small portions and eating slowly helps you experience sensations of hunger without the danger of overeating. Savor your food and really enjoy it, and let your body tell you when you’re full rather than trying too eat too much too fast.
Avoid Drinking While You Eat
Drinking water while you eat can take up valuable space in your stomach. Rather than drinking while eating, drink between meals so you don’t feel full too soon.
Politely Refuse Large Portions or More Food
While people may ask you to have seconds or invite you to eat more because it’s a special occasion, there’s nothing wrong with turning them down politely. Refusing second helpings can mean the difference between a fine evening and major discomfort.
Pay Attention to Your Body and Its Needs
Weight loss surgery really is about adjusting lifestyles and getting used to your new needs following surgery. Go slowly as you recover early on, and try to pay attention to your body and its needs when it comes to your diet and your eating habits.

What Can Cause Gastric Sleeve to Fail?
Patients who visit Tijuana Bariatrics routinely achieve excellent results through gastric sleeve (sleeve gastrectomy), an effective weight loss surgery option. There is the potential, however, that a gastric sleeve may fail. We’d like to go over the basics of these matters right now.
How common is gastric sleeve failure?
Gastric sleeve is less invasive and complicated than gastric bypass surgeries, which makes gastric sleeve safer and less prone to total failure or serious complications. Modern surgical techniques and sterilization methods have made the surgery much safer than it was in previous years as well.
Event though the chance of failure is low, it is possible for the gastric sleeve to fail, both in terms of overall surgical effectiveness as well as long-term weight loss results. Patients should be aware of these potential complications prior to the surgery being performed so they have realistic expectations about the procedure.
Common Causes of Sleeve Gastrectomy Failure
Some potential causes of sleeve gastrectomy failure include:
- Acid Reflux (GERD) – Patients run a risk of developing acid reflux following gastric sleeve surgery. Part of the reason for this is heavy meals, which can have a major effect on the smaller stomach pouch if patients are not mindful of what they are eating.
- Complications from Surgery – Poor sutures on the smaller stomach pouch, adhesions to other organs, infection, and other kinds of complications can lead to the failure of a gastric sleeve.
- Stretching of the Stomach Pouch – While the stomach is made smaller, gradual restretching of the stomach pouch may occur over time, resulting in weight gain or minimal long-term weight loss.
- Patients Do Not Make Sufficient Lifestyle Changes – If patients do not make changes to diet and activity level, this can lead to limited weight loss over the long run. Patients need to be active participants in the changes ahead following gastric sleeve.
What Patients Can Do to Prevent Gastric Sleeve Failure
There are many things patients can do to ensure success of gastric sleeve surgery and long-term weight loss. We recommend the following:
- Exercise regularly to help lose weight and keep it off
- Eat meals that are healthy as well as nutritious
- Find online and physical support groups for tips and moral support
- Speak about issues concerning weight loss surgery with your loved ones and your surgeon
- Meet with a counselor to discuss cravings, challenges, and other issues with overall wellness
How Our Surgical Team Prevents Gastric Sleeve Failure
In order to ensure success, our team always provides patients with ample information about pre-op and post-op concerns. This allows patients to understand the nature of gastric sleeve surgery and what they should expect.
Our team of doctors take great care with surgery, checking the revised stomach pouch thoroughly and multiple times to avoid leakage and other potential problems. Patients are closely looked after in the early days of surgical healing in order to prevent complications and achieve the best possible surgical results.
Options for Revision and Correction Surgery
If you do encounter issues with your gastric sleeve procedure, our bariatric surgeons can perform bariatric surgery revision procedures to address complications and promote weight loss. These revision options can be discussed in greater detail during your consultation.

Gastric Sleeve and Heartburn: Patient Information
Our leading weight loss surgery specialists serve patients at our state-of-the-art facility in Tijuana. One of the bariatric procedures that they believe in a great deal is gastric sleeve surgery (sleeve gastrectomy), a low maintenance, less invasive option for weight loss. Even though they feel that gastric sleeve is one of the ideal solutions out there, it is not always the best fit for everyone who wishes to undergo bariatric surgery. With that in mind, we want to consider how heartburn can play a factor in determining a patient’s suitability for gastric sleeve.
Heartburn Can Be the Result of Obesity and Morbid Obesity
Heartburn (aka acid reflux and GERD) can be uncomfortable and painful, and it’s usually brought on by certain foods. Yet medical findings have noted that being obese or morbidly obese can increase the risk of heartburn occurring. The exact reason for this has yet to be fully identified, but experts suggest that the excess fat around the abdominal region may cause excessive pressure buildup on the stomach, leading to attacks of heartburn.
By that logic, bariatric surgery procedures such as gastric sleeve should be able to address heartburn. Yet matters are more complicated than that.
Can gastric sleeve help reverse issues with heartburn?
Interestingly enough, the answer is not necessarily.
As we noted in a previous post on this blog, gastric sleeve can potentially make acid reflux more likely in certain patients.
Why is this the case?
A study last year published in JAMA Surgery looked at 39,000 patients who underwent bariatric surgery. While gastric bypass was considered most effective at addressing heartburn, the study found that people with no history of heartburn prior to gastric sleeve surgery were more likely to develop heartburn after the procedure.
The reason for this has to do with the nature of gastric sleeve surgery. Since heartburn is caused by heavy meals that force gastric fluids up the esophagus, decreasing the stomach size as gastric sleeve can make the condition more likely.
What does this mean for potential gastric sleeve patients?
If a patient suffers from heartburn or shows a likelihood for potentially developing heartburn prior to weight loss surgery, we will be more likely to suggest a different bariatric procedure rather than gastric sleeve. This will allow the patient to lose weight while not increasing the risk of heartburn and other complications.
Preventing Heartburn After Gastric Sleeve
If you do undergo gastric sleeve surgery, there are several things that you can do to prevent heartburn from occurring or being a potential problem:
- Do not smoke or use smokeless tobacco
- Avoid or be wary of spicy foods
- Avoid consuming alcoholic beverages
- Avoid overeating
- Reduce consumption of caffeine
- Wear loose-fitting clothing
If you do suffer heartburn, taking antacids is helpful. Try to be attuned to what caused the heartburn to occur and consider lifestyle modifications that can prevent it from happening in the future.

The Benefits of Traveling to Mexico for Gastric Sleeve Surgery
At Tijuana Bariatrics, we take great pride in offering patients the best possible bariatric surgery we can provide. This is why we believe so much in gastric sleeve surgery (sleeve gastrectomy) to help promote rapid and healthy weight loss. We also believe in passing on other advantages to patients that are not necessarily linked to the procedure per se. With that in mind, let’s go over some of the advantages of traveling to Mexico in order to undergo gastric sleeve surgery.
A Better Exchange Rate
As of this writing, the current exchange rate is $1 in the United States worth almost 15 pesos in Mexico. If you were to travel to Mexico for medical tourism, your dollar would go a long way, allowing you to save money even if you are spending money on medical procedures.
Compatible with Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs)
Medical tourism is compatible with flexible spending accounts (FSAs), which are reimbursement funds for approved medical expenses. Since stipulations can vary from FSA provider to FSA provider, it’s a good idea to double check to ensure that your gastric sleeve is covered and what documentation is necessary for problem-free funds approval.

Avoiding Kidney Stones After Gastric Sleeve Surgery
Our weight loss experts are among the leading bariatric surgeons based in Tijuana. They both believe in the effectiveness and safety of gastric sleeve sugery (sleeve gastrectomy), which promotes quick and safe weight loss. Yet gastric sleeve, like other weight loss procedures, it not without risk. We’d like to go over the potential for developing kidney stones after bariatric surgery right now.
Why does kidney stone risk increase after bariatric surgery?
When you undergo bariatric surgery, your digestive tract is fundamentally changed. In the process, patients will experience issues with absorbing calcium and oxalate through their system. The oxalate levels will be higher in a patient’s urinary tract than usual, which ups the risk of developing kidney stones.
While the increased risk is of some concern, patients should keep in mind that there is plenty they can do to prevent kidney stones from forming.
Be Sure to Drink Water Throughout the Day
Staying hydrated throughout the day is crucial for total wellness and good overall health. Be sure to sip water between meals in order to keep hydrated and help prevent the formation of kidney stones. This can make a major difference.
Be Wary of Foods High in Oxalates
Certain foods and beverages have a higher oxalate content than others, which can make kidney stones more likely. Some problem items include dark leafy greens, nuts of various kinds, and black tea. It’s okay to have these every now and then, but it’s ideal to limit intake for the sake of your lasting wellness.
Reduce Your Consumption of Red Meat
Red meat every now and then is all right, but that doesn’t mean you should rely on animal protein only. Plant-based proteins such as beans can provide you with the protein content you need throughout the day without increasing your risk of developing kidney stones.
Reduce Your Sodium Intake
Since sodium can increase kidney stone risk and also have a negative impact on your overall wellness, it’s always a good idea to reduce the sodium in your diet. This generally means avoiding packaged and processed foods and eating foods that are fresh and well prepared. This is a convenient excuse to monitor labels and pay better attention to what you’re putting into your body.

Can Gastric Sleeve Improve Heart Health?
All of our bariatric surgeons take great pride in helping patients at our Tijuana-based weight loss surgery center. Patients from San Diego, Southern California, and throughout the region visit the practice in order to undergo gastric sleeve surgery (sleeve gastrectomy), a safe and low-maintenance weight loss option.
A number of people who are interested in procedures like the gastric sleeve suffer from heart conditions or are at risk for cardiovascular disease and stroke. Let’s look at how gastric sleeve can have a positive impact on the health of your heart.
How Gastric Sleeve Improves Overall Wellness
When you undergo a gastric sleeve, you will be consuming fewer calories each day. This means rapid and yet safe weight loss early on after the surgery has been performed. Gastric sleeve has allowed countless patients reach a more ideal weight, and in doing so improve their general wellness. When weight loss cannot be achieved naturally or there is a pressing health problem related to weight, gastric sleeve is a great option to consider.
The Effects of Gastric Sleeve on Heart Health
The American Heart Association notes that losing weight is a great way to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke in those who are obese. Losing weight lowers the workload of your heart when it comes to pumping blood, and it helps reduce the risk of fat in your bloodstream forming plaque on the arterial walls and clogging your arteries. Blood pressure will go down as a result, meaning fewer issues with health problems related to hypertension.
In addition, losing weight means the levels of good cholesterol in your blood (HDL) will increase while the bad cholesterol (LDL) will decrease. Chances of blood clots will continue to diminish as patients achieve good overall health.
Other Ways That Gastric Sleeve Improves Overall Health
Studies have found that losing weight through bariatric surgery has also been able to help patients manage their diabetes, reduce stress and strain on their back and other joints, and even avoid developing various kinds of cancers down the road.
In essence, risk factors for illnesses as you age go down while overall wellness and life quality goes up thanks to gastric sleeve and other kinds of bariatric procedures.
Weight Loss Surgery Needs to Be Paired with Smart Lifestyle Choices
Keep in mind that the gastric surgery alone isn’t enough to address all of your health problems. Patients need to eat healthy and exercise regularly to maximize the effects of gastric sleeve surgery. It’s all about shifting into a healthier lifestyle, and for many people, the bariatric surgery procedure is the first important step.
Is gastric sleeve surgery right for me?
Gastric sleeve surgery may be an ideal option for you and your needs, though that needs to be determined during a consultation at our practice. During this consultation, you’ll receive answers to all of the questions you have regarding surgical weight loss options, allowing you to make a confident, well-informed decision.
